This picture started generating a buzz long before its scheduled release date and for good reason. Dan Gilroy’s directorial debut with a remarkable cast (Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Bill Paxton and Riz Ahmed) has received raving reviews and an incredible score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. The score (by James Newton Howard) has received critical acclaim as well, producing awesome quotes like ‘A score that fits the grimy and gritty world of L.A. after dark with musical precision.’ (Examiner) James took a very original approach for the score, to quote Dan Gilroy: ‘James Newton Howard went counterpoint with the music. He’s messing with the audience’s heads. When Lou did something bad — and there would normally be a sting — the music is celebration, inspiration, it lulls the audience into a different place. The score is crucial to let us be nonjudgmental.’ (Huffington Post) A very cool movie and score to have been a part of.
